Chlidonias hybrida
The Chlidonias hybrida, also known as the Whiskered Tern, is a graceful bird distinguished by its black cap, white face, and distinctive black whisker-like markings on its cheeks.
Found in Croatia's wetland habitats, including marshes, lakes, and river deltas, this species is known for its agile flight and aerial hunting skills. During the breeding season, Whiskered Terns form large colonies, often nesting on floating vegetation.
These birds primarily feed on insects and small fish, which they catch by hovering over the water's surface and plunging down to snatch their prey. As an integral part of Croatia's wetland ecosystems, the presence of Whiskered Terns underscores the importance of conserving these habitats to ensure the survival of diverse bird species.
