Haematopus ostralegus
The Haematopus ostralegus, commonly known as the Eurasian Oystercatcher, is a distinctive bird with a long, orange-red bill, black and white plumage, and bright red eyes.
In Croatia, this species can be found along the coastline, particularly in coastal wetlands, estuaries, and sandy beaches. With its strong bill, it feeds on a variety of prey, including mollusks, crustaceans, and worms, often using its bill to pry open shells.
The presence of Eurasian Oystercatchers in Croatia's coastal ecosystems is not only a testament to the country's rich biodiversity but also highlights the importance of preserving these coastal habitats for the protection of shorebird species.
