Salmo Dentex

Salmo dentex is a variety of trout, a freshwater fish in the family Salmonidae, found in the western Balkans.

The status of S. dentex, locally known as the zubatak, long remained unclear due to lack of samples for detailed analyses, hybridisation with other trout lineages and diverse and multiple designations of the same trout in different areas.

Endangered species in Croatia, the main reason for the decrease in numbers is due to regulation and blockage of watercourses, pollution and global warming.

The body is spindle-shaped, the head is elongated. He has a small depression between his eyes.

The mouth is large, so the upper jaw reaches behind the eye. He has extremely strong teeth. The body is relatively low. On the sides there are black spots in the shape the letter x, and between the eye and the preoperculum two slightly larger spots.

The membrane that connects the rods of the dorsal fin is also sprinkled with black spots, among which are red, particularly intense colors on the middle parts of the flanks.
