Calonectris diomedea
Calonectris diomedea, commonly known as the Scopoli’s Shearwater, is a large seabird species predominantly found in the Mediterranean Sea, including along the Croatian coast.
It is known for its impressive gliding flight over the water, often covering vast distances in search of food, which mainly consists of fish and squid. This bird nests on rocky Mediterranean islands, creating burrows or occupying crevices in cliffs, making the Croatian coastline an ideal habitat.
Scopoli’s Shearwater has a unique vocalisation, especially during the breeding season, adding a mysterious element to its natural habitat. Due to threats such as bycatch, habitat disturbance, and pollution, efforts to protect their nesting sites and manage fishing practices are essential to ensure the survival of this species.
