Podiceps auritus

Podiceps auritus, commonly known as the Horned Grebe, is a striking water bird found in Croatia, particularly in freshwater lakes and marshes during the breeding season.

This medium-sized grebe is easily recognised by its distinctive breeding plumage, which features striking black and chestnut colours along with prominent golden ear tufts, giving it a unique and elegant appearance. Horned Grebes are excellent divers and are known for their intricate courtship displays, which include elaborate movements on the water.

They primarily feed on small fish, invertebrates, and aquatic plants, playing a vital role in the aquatic ecosystem. As they are sensitive to habitat changes, conservation efforts are essential to ensure that the natural wetlands of Croatia remain protected, supporting the survival of this beautiful species.
