Acipenser gueldenstaedtii
Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, commonly known as the Russian Sturgeon, is a species of sturgeon native to the Caspian Sea, but it has historically been found in the Black Sea and its associated river systems, including parts of Croatia.
This large, anadromous fish is known for its impressive size and distinctive body shape, characterised by a long, fusiform body covered with bony scutes. Like other sturgeons, it has a long lifespan and is highly valued for its roe, which is processed into caviar. However, overfishing, habitat destruction, and the construction of dams have led to significant declines in wild populations of Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, making it a species of conservation concern.
Efforts to restore its populations include breeding and reintroduction programs, particularly in areas where it once thrived. This species plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystems it inhabits, and its conservation is vital for preserving biodiversity in the region.
