Asio flammeus

Asio flammeus, commonly known as the Short-eared Owl, is a medium-sized owl species that inhabits open country areas such as grasslands, marshes, and moorlands.

Distinguished by its short, often inconspicuous ear tufts and striking yellow eyes set in a dark facial disk, this owl is well adapted to hunting in daylight as well as at dusk and dawn. Unlike many other owls, the Short-eared Owl is a ground-nester, constructing its nest in grassy areas where it can camouflage effectively.

It primarily feeds on small mammals, particularly voles, but also occasionally preys on birds and insects. In Croatia, the Short-eared Owl can be observed during migration and wintering periods, especially in open habitats where it soars low over the ground in search of prey.

Its presence highlights the importance of preserving Croatia’s diverse natural landscapes and maintaining habitats conducive to the survival of this remarkable bird.
