Asio otus
Asio otus, commonly known as the Long-eared Owl, is a medium-sized owl species that can be found across Europe, including Croatia, in woodland edges, farmlands, and dense thickets.
This owl is notable for its long ear tufts, which it raises when alarmed, giving it a distinctive appearance compared to other owl species. With its mottled brown and grey plumage, the Long-eared Owl blends seamlessly with tree bark, making it well-camouflaged during daylight hours.
Primarily a nocturnal hunter, it feeds on small mammals like mice and voles, using its excellent hearing and keen eyesight to locate prey even in low light. Long-eared Owls typically roost in groups during winter, forming what is known as a “communal roost,” which can be an impressive sight when several individuals are perched together.
In Croatia, this species underscores the ecological richness of its woodland areas, highlighting the importance of conserving natural habitats.
