Athene noctua

Athene noctua, commonly known as the Little Owl, is a small yet charismatic owl species found throughout Europe, including Croatia, favouring open landscapes, rural areas, and rocky terrains.

Recognised for its piercing yellow eyes and distinctive "bobbing" behaviour when curious or alarmed, the Little Owl is both diurnal and nocturnal, making it more visible than many other owl species. With a diet consisting of insects, small mammals, and occasionally birds, it plays an essential role in controlling pest populations.

Its characteristic, repetitive call often echoes through quiet countryside settings, especially at dusk. In Croatia, the Little Owl is a symbol of the country's vibrant avian diversity and serves as a reminder of the need to preserve traditional agricultural landscapes that support such unique wildlife.
