Glaucidium passerinum

Glaucidium passerinum, commonly known as the Eurasian Pygmy Owl, is the smallest owl species in Europe and can be found in forested areas of Croatia.

Despite its small size, this owl is a fierce hunter, preying on small birds, insects, and mammals. It has a distinctive, high-pitched call and is primarily active during dawn and dusk, though it may also hunt during the day.

The Eurasian Pygmy Owl favours old-growth forests with plenty of cover, where it can hide and hunt with ease. Its presence in Croatia highlights the region’s rich biodiversity and the importance of preserving natural habitats to support unique and rare species.
