Dendrocopos syriacus

Dendrocopos syriacus, commonly known as the Syrian Woodpecker, is a striking bird species found across parts of southeastern Europe and the Middle East, including regions in Croatia.

Recognised by its distinctive black-and-white plumage, the Syrian Woodpecker features a bright red patch on the nape of its neck, with males also displaying a red crown. Preferring deciduous and mixed forests, this woodpecker thrives in areas with abundant tree cover, where it forages for insects, larvae, and seeds.

In Croatia, the Syrian Woodpecker contributes to the ecological richness of its habitat, playing an important role in pest control and fostering biodiversity. However, habitat destruction and urban development are ongoing threats, highlighting the necessity of conservation measures to protect this beautiful species and its environment.
