Hierophis gemonensis

Hierophis gemonensis, commonly known as the Balkan whip snake, is a non-venomous and agile snake species found in Croatia and other parts of the Balkans.

It inhabits a variety of environments, including rocky areas, grasslands, and open woodlands, and is often spotted basking in sunny spots. Recognisable by its slender body, smooth scales, and typical length of up to 130 centimetres, this species is predominantly brown or greyish with darker patterns, aiding in its camouflage.

The Balkan whip snake is an important part of the local ecosystem, feeding on small mammals, lizards, and insects while remaining harmless to humans.
