Phalacrocorax aristotelis
Phalacrocorax aristotelis, commonly known as the European Shag, is a medium-sized cormorant species that is often seen along rocky coastlines, including parts of Croatia's Adriatic coast.
This bird is recognised for its sleek black plumage with a metallic sheen, especially prominent during the breeding season when it also sports a distinct greenish tinge and a small crest on its head. The Shag is an expert diver, using its slender body and webbed feet to catch fish underwater, sometimes diving up to 45 metres deep.
It nests on cliffs and rocky ledges, forming small colonies, and plays an important role in coastal ecosystems by regulating fish populations. Preserving its coastal habitats is essential for maintaining the natural biodiversity along the Adriatic.
