Phalacrocorax pygmeus

Phalacrocorax pygmeus, also known as the Pygmy Cormorant, is a small species of cormorant found across wetlands, rivers, and lakes in southeastern Europe, including Croatia.

This species stands out due to its relatively small size, dark brown plumage, and distinctive short bill, setting it apart from larger cormorants. The Pygmy Cormorant is highly dependent on wetland habitats for feeding, as it forages primarily on fish by diving and swimming underwater. It nests in colonies, often in reed beds or low trees near water bodies.

The species is listed as a species of conservation concern due to habitat loss and degradation of wetland ecosystems. In Croatia, efforts to protect its wetland habitats are crucial for ensuring the survival of this vulnerable species.
