Dendrocopos leucotos

Dendrocopos leucotos, commonly known as the White-backed Woodpecker, is a striking bird species that inhabits old-growth forests in Europe, including parts of Croatia.

It is the largest of the spotted woodpeckers and can be identified by its black and white plumage, particularly the broad white patch on its back, which gives it its name. This woodpecker prefers mature, deciduous forests with an abundance of dead wood, where it feeds on insects, larvae, and sometimes seeds.

It plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of forest ecosystems by controlling insect populations and creating nesting holes used by other species. Due to habitat fragmentation and loss of old forests, the White-backed Woodpecker is considered near-threatened, and conservation efforts in Croatia are vital for preserving its natural habitat.
