Dendrocopos major
Dendrocopos major, or Great Spotted Woodpecker, is one of the most widespread and recognisable woodpecker species in Europe, including Croatia.
It is easily identified by its black and white plumage, red undertail, and distinctive drumming sound that resonates through forests. This adaptable species inhabits a wide range of environments, from deciduous and coniferous forests to parks and gardens.
The Great Spotted Woodpecker feeds on insects, seeds, and nuts, and is also known for its habit of creating "anvils" by wedging pine cones in crevices to extract seeds.
In Croatia, the Great Spotted Woodpecker contributes to the region's biodiversity by helping control insect populations and creating nesting cavities in trees, which are often used by other species. Although it is not considered threatened, maintaining healthy forest ecosystems is key to supporting its population.
