Phalaropus lobatus

Phalaropus lobatus, also known as the Red-necked Phalarope, is a captivating bird species occasionally spotted along the coastal areas of Croatia.

These small shorebirds are distinguished by their striking plumage, with a reddish neck and distinctive markings. Unlike many other bird species, the Red-necked Phalarope exhibits reverse sexual dimorphism, with females displaying brighter colors than males.

During the breeding season, they can be found nesting in the Arctic tundra, often near freshwater lakes and ponds. In the winter, they migrate southward, occasionally making stopovers along the Croatian coast. Red-necked Phalaropes have a unique feeding behavior, as they spin in circles on the water's surface, stirring up prey with their feet.

Despite their captivating nature, these birds face threats from habitat loss and climate change, emphasizing the importance of conservation efforts. Let's appreciate the beauty of these unique shorebirds and work together to protect their habitats in Croatia and beyond.
