Picoides tridactylus

Picoides tridactylus, commonly known as the Three-toed Woodpecker, is a distinctive bird species found in the coniferous forests of Croatia.

Characterised by its unique three-toed feet, this woodpecker has a striking plumage, featuring a black and white pattern along with a prominent yellow patch on the head of males. The Three-toed Woodpecker primarily forages on trees for insects, particularly bark beetles, and uses its strong bill to create excavations in the wood.

This species is notable for its preference for older, more mature forests, where it contributes to the ecosystem by aiding in the decomposition of dead trees. Due to its reliance on specific habitats, the conservation of forest areas is crucial for maintaining healthy populations of the Three-toed Woodpecker in Croatia.
