Picus canus

Picus canus, commonly known as the Grey-headed Woodpecker, is a striking bird species found in various wooded habitats across Croatia, including mixed forests and parklands.

This medium-sized woodpecker is easily recognised by its distinctive grey head, green body, and black markings on the wings and back. The Grey-headed Woodpecker primarily feeds on insects, particularly ants and beetles, foraging on tree trunks and branches using its strong bill to excavate bark and wood.

Its presence indicates a healthy ecosystem, as it plays a vital role in controlling insect populations and contributing to the dynamics of forest environments. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving natural habitats are essential for ensuring the survival of this beautiful species in Croatia.
