Pseudopus apodus

Pseudopus apodus, commonly known as the European Legless Lizard or Scheltopusik, is a fascinating reptile species found in Croatia, particularly in dry, rocky, and bushy habitats.

Despite its snake-like appearance, it is a lizard and is characterised by its elongated body and smooth, shiny scales. The Scheltopusik can grow up to 1.5 metres in length and is known for its ability to shed its tail when threatened, which helps it escape predators.

While it is a non-venomous species, it uses its strong jaws to feed on insects, small mammals, and other invertebrates. Due to habitat loss and human disturbance, the Pseudopus apodus faces certain risks, and conservation efforts are important to preserve its population in the wild.
