Tyto alba

Tyto alba, commonly known as the Barn Owl, is a striking nocturnal bird of prey found across Croatia, primarily in open countryside, farmland, and grasslands.

Recognised by its heart-shaped facial disc, golden-brown and white plumage, and dark eyes, the Barn Owl possesses excellent night vision and hearing, enabling it to hunt effectively in low-light conditions. It preys primarily on small mammals such as voles and mice, often hunting silently from a perch before swooping down to capture its prey.

The presence of Barn Owls is a positive indicator of a healthy ecosystem, as they play a crucial role in controlling rodent populations. Their conservation is essential for maintaining ecological balance in agricultural landscapes.
