Strix uralensis

Strix uralensis, commonly known as the Ural Owl, is a large owl species that inhabits the dense forests of Croatia and other parts of Central and Northern Europe.

Distinguished by its long tail and lack of ear tufts, the Ural Owl has a pale, rounded face with dark eyes, and its plumage is a mix of greyish-brown tones with fine streaks that provide excellent camouflage in its forested environment.

Known for its haunting calls, which can carry over long distances, the Ural Owl primarily hunts small mammals, including voles, mice, and sometimes small birds. Its presence in Croatian forests highlights the importance of preserving old-growth forests and maintaining biodiversity within these ecosystems.
