Strix aluco
Strix aluco, commonly known as the Tawny Owl, is a widespread resident species in Croatia and much of Europe.
This medium-sized owl, known for its classic hooting call, prefers dense forests, woodlands, and parklands, where it finds shelter and ample prey. Tawny Owls have a robust build with rounded wings and a rounded head, often appearing in greyish-brown or reddish-brown colour morphs that help them camouflage in the trees.
Primarily nocturnal, they are skilled hunters, feeding on small mammals, birds, and insects. Their presence is crucial for maintaining a balanced ecosystem by controlling rodent populations.
