Bombina bombina
Bombina bombina, also known as the European fire-bellied toad, is a striking amphibian found in various wetland habitats across Croatia, including ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams.
Recognisable for its bright orange or red belly covered with black spots, which it displays as a defensive posture when threatened, this toad has a unique ability to produce a distinctive, guttural call during its mating season.
The upper surface of its body is typically olive-green or brown, helping it blend into its environment, while its belly's vivid coloration serves as a warning to predators of its toxicity. Bombina bombina prefers shallow, slow-moving waters with abundant vegetation, where it breeds and larvae develop.
Despite its fascinating appearance, the species faces threats from habitat destruction, water pollution, and the introduction of invasive species. Efforts to preserve wetlands are crucial for ensuring the continued survival of this species in Croatia.
