Pelobates fuscus
Pelobates fuscus, commonly known as the European Green Toad or the Common Spadefoot Toad, is a species of amphibian found in parts of Croatia, particularly in sandy, dry habitats such as meadows and agricultural fields.
This species is easily recognised by its characteristic spade-like structure on its hind legs, which it uses for digging burrows. The toad has a distinct greenish-brown or greyish coloration with darker spots and can adapt well to dry conditions by retreating into its burrow during the warmer months.
Pelobates fuscus is mostly nocturnal, emerging at night to hunt for invertebrates, small insects, and other arthropods. Unfortunately, this species is facing habitat loss, particularly due to urbanisation and changes in land use, and is classified as vulnerable in certain areas.
Conservation efforts are important to maintain its populations and protect its habitats.
