Bufo viridis
Bufo viridis, commonly known as the European green toad, is a species found in Croatia, particularly in areas with open grasslands, agricultural fields, and near bodies of water such as ponds and lakes.
This toad is recognisable by its olive-green or brownish-green skin, which is often speckled with darker spots. It has a relatively smooth body, unlike some other toad species, and its underbelly is pale, sometimes with a yellowish or whitish hue. Bufo viridis is a highly adaptable species, thriving in a range of habitats from dry fields to wetlands, and it is often found in areas that experience seasonal flooding.
The species is also known for its distinctive "toad call," which is heard during the breeding season. Although Bufo viridis is not currently considered endangered, its populations face threats such as habitat degradation, pollution, and the encroachment of urban development.
Conservation of natural wetland areas is crucial to ensure the survival of this amphibian in Croatia.
