Hyla arborea
Hyla arborea, also known as the European tree frog, is a small amphibian species commonly found in Croatia, especially in wetland habitats, ponds, and along the edges of forests.
This vibrant green frog is easily recognisable by its smooth, bright green skin, with some individuals showing darker markings or a yellowish underside. Hyla arborea has distinctive, large, round eyes and sticky pads on its toes that allow it to climb vegetation, which is a characteristic of its arboreal lifestyle.
It is often heard during the breeding season, as males produce a loud, distinctive "croak" or "ribbit" call that can be heard from a distance. These frogs are generally active at night, preying on a variety of small insects and invertebrates. While Hyla arborea is relatively widespread, it is vulnerable to habitat loss due to wetland drainage, pollution, and climate change.
Efforts to preserve freshwater habitats are essential to protect this species in Croatia.
