Pelophylax lessonae

Pelophylax lessonae, commonly known as the marsh frog, is a species of frog native to Croatia and can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats, such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers.

This frog is typically green, with darker spots or a mottled pattern, making it well-camouflaged in its aquatic environment. Characteristically, it has smooth skin and a prominent ridge along the back of the head, which is a defining feature of the species. Pelophylax lessonae is an excellent swimmer, and although it is primarily aquatic, it may occasionally venture onto land. During the breeding season, males emit a deep, resonant croak, attracting females to the water for mating.

The species is known to hybridize with other frogs, particularly Pelophylax ridibundus, the larger green frog, resulting in hybrid offspring. Pelophylax lessonae is generally not considered endangered, but like many amphibians, it is threatened by habitat loss, water pollution, and climate change.

Protection of wetland ecosystems is crucial to ensuring the survival of this species in Croatia.
