Rana arvalis
Rana arvalis, commonly known as the moor frog, is a species of frog found in various parts of Croatia, particularly in wetland areas, meadows, and marshes.
Characterized by its variable coloration, Rana arvalis can range from green to brown, often with darker markings or a distinct, light-colored line running down the back. This species is notable for its adaptability to a variety of habitats, including freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams.
During the breeding season, males of the species produce a distinctive croak to attract females, often creating a chorus in the early spring. Rana arvalis is also known for its migratory behavior, as it can travel significant distances to find suitable breeding grounds. Though generally not considered threatened, the moor frog's population can be impacted by habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change.
Conservation efforts focused on protecting wetland areas and maintaining water quality are essential for the continued survival of this species in Croatia.
