Mauremys rivulata

Mauremys rivulata, commonly known as the Mediterranean Pond Turtle, is a species found in various regions of southeastern Europe, including Croatia.

This turtle is characterised by its distinctive, elongated shell, which can range in colour from brown to olive, often with darker streaks and spots. Typically inhabiting freshwater habitats such as rivers, ponds, and marshes, the Mediterranean Pond Turtle prefers slow-moving waters where it can forage on aquatic vegetation, insects, and small invertebrates.

Its populations are facing threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, highlighting the need for ongoing conservation efforts to protect this resilient yet vulnerable species.
