Natrix tessellata
Natrix tessellata, commonly known as the Dice Snake, is a non-venomous, semi-aquatic snake species found in Croatia and other parts of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
This medium-sized snake, characterised by its olive or brownish body with dark, tessellated (checkered) patterns, thrives near freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and ponds. It is an excellent swimmer and primarily preys on fish and amphibians, contributing to the balance of aquatic ecosystems.
Despite being harmless to humans, the Dice Snake is sometimes mistaken for a venomous species, leading to unnecessary persecution. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure the survival of this ecologically important reptile.
