Rana latastei

Rana latastei, commonly known as Lataste's frog, is a species native to the Mediterranean region, particularly found in parts of southern Europe, including Croatia.

It is typically associated with freshwater habitats such as ponds, marshes, and slow-flowing rivers, often in areas with abundant vegetation and calm waters. This species is relatively small, with a slender body and a smooth, typically brownish or greyish skin, sometimes adorned with darker spots. Its coloration helps it blend into the natural environment, providing camouflage against predators. Rana latastei is an agile and secretive species, known for its ability to move quickly both on land and in water.

The frogs are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of invertebrates, such as insects, spiders, and other small arthropods. They play an important ecological role in regulating insect populations. During the breeding season, males produce distinct calls, often heard near breeding sites, which attract females. While Rana latastei is not currently considered endangered, its habitat is susceptible to disturbances caused by urbanization, agricultural development, and climate change.

Conservation efforts focusing on maintaining clean, natural aquatic environments are vital to preserving the species' populations in Croatia.
