Salamandra atra

Salamandra atra, also known as the Alpine Salamander, is a terrestrial amphibian native to the mountainous regions of Europe, including Croatia.

This species is easily recognized by its striking black coloration, often with a smooth and glossy skin that serves as a crucial defense mechanism against predators. Unlike many other salamanders, Salamandra atra is viviparous, meaning it gives birth to live young, an adaptation to its cold, high-altitude habitat.

The Alpine Salamander thrives in humid, shaded environments, often found in forests and rocky slopes. Due to its limited distribution and sensitivity to environmental changes, preserving its natural habitat is essential for ensuring the survival of this fascinating species.
