Triturus carnifex

Triturus carnifex, commonly known as the Italian Crested Newt, is a striking amphibian found primarily in the wetlands and freshwater habitats of southern Europe, including parts of Croatia.

Characterized by its dark, olive-brown body adorned with orange or yellow spots, this species is notable for the prominent crest that males develop during the breeding season. Triturus carnifex is a semi-aquatic creature, spending much of its life in water, where it breeds in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams.

Outside the breeding season, it often seeks refuge in moist, terrestrial environments. As a species listed in the European Union's Habitats Directive, it faces threats from habitat destruction and pollution. Conservation efforts are critical to protect this unique species and its delicate ecosystems.
