Zamenis longissimus
Zamenis longissimus, commonly known as the Aesculapian Snake, is a non-venomous snake species found in Croatia, typically inhabiting woodlands, hedgerows, and rocky areas.
This slender snake, which can grow up to two metres in length, is recognised by its smooth, shiny scales and uniform olive-green or brownish coloration. Known for its agility and climbing skills, it preys primarily on small mammals, birds, and eggs, playing a crucial role in controlling rodent populations.
The species holds historical significance, as it is associated with the Rod of Asclepius, a symbol of medicine and healing. Protecting its natural habitat is essential to preserving this important and harmless species.
